Student Project

Atom

Atom is a school group project at Gobelins.
"Proximity and Conviviality in the Heart of Your Neighborhood."

Our starting point was having a touch screen in urban area to facilitate interaction, it needs to be accessible ergonomically, visually and geographically. Several interesting issues related to urban area arose, in particular housing and relationship between neighbors.
The majority of the French population lives in cities (76%); urbanresidences therefore constitute an important part of the urban landscape. Our approach has a utopian notion and necessity, we have to "Create a space of human relations in the heart of dwelling".

OBSERVATION
In many buildings, contacts between neighbors are almost non-existent, with the consequence of a scarcity or an absence of solidarity, however essential.

CHALLENGE

How to evolve from the residence bulletin board to a new multimedia surface? How to improve daily life and facilitate local human exchanges between neighbors, shops and neighbor.

IDEA

Create an information and interactive touch screen for urban habitats.
Facilitate exchange, sharing of services within a building, thereby helping to improve the daily and local life of the neighborhood.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Website

There are many local services that have recently and quickly developed on the web. Online platform that offer to get to know yours neighbors, and take advantage of their proximity to learn about the neighborhood, exchange good addresses or make themselves useful through small services.

✅Benefits
• Multiple angles (My Neighbors, My Neighborhood, My City)
• Create space an online space your building to interact with neighbors
• A developed service of small ads

❌Disadvantage
• Only available online
• Too many features
• No possibility of convincing your neighbors to register
(result: few people from the same residence).

Press & Newspaper

The newspaper or magazine is the medium used by town halls to inform residents about the life of their neighborhood (works, renovations, constructions ...).

✅Benefits
It allows the town hall and associations to communicate to the inhabitants and increasingly affirms the benefits of the tendency to "neighbor" (cf: direct evening + date), that is to say, exchange, discuss and share with your neighbors

❌Disadvantage
We realized after questioning several people on this subject that the "small neighborhood newspaper" was only partially read and quickly ended up in the trash.

APPROACH

I worked closely with the Art Director, we started with a board of inspirations that include pictures of the artist, existing graphic elements from past cd covers or promotions. We collect elements like colors, typography, symbols. We also gather cumbia's imagery from traditional costumes to cumbia's artists cd cover, leaflet and video clip. We added some external inspiration like graffitis and murals as well.

PROCESS

We choose 3 visuals directions:
- The abstract direction, is a mix of camouflage pattern combine with Gerwald Rockenschaub's composition and color.

- The mural direction combine with graffiti font

- The comic-book character direction inspire by Jamaican dancehall cover from the artist Wilfred Limonious

SOLUTION

We choose the comic-book character direction, because it's easy to adapt depending of the support.

Classic Support
The wall display panel / cork board is the communication medium for residents & concierge in residences. It is generally located in the halls of buildings and is governed by standards. Its specific definition is as follows: urban furniture for communication and signage. It can be of several sizes, horizontally or vertically (110 x 94/90 x 120/90 x 60).

✅Benefits
This support offers a large display space and resistance to possible attacks.

❌Disadvantage
A risk of not being regularly updated, resulting in a loss of interest and attention for this type of display (he falls into indifference, into oblivion).

USER TARGET

Our system is aimed at city dwellers, more specifically residents of recent buildings. Our target is dynamic and civic. The age range is from 15 to 70 years old.

APPROACH

The atom project is a concept of communication between the inhabitants of the same district. It involves knowledge in the social sciences and interactions between institutions within an agglomeration. Specialized in multimedia, our team does not have the skills to be an expert in these fields. In order to succeed in this challenge, we worked very early on with the population of a neighborhood to understand and integrate the communication / information flow problems.

Our process took place in 5 phases:

  • Questionnaire with residents (October-November 2008)

  • Interviews with local stakeholders (town halls, associations, programs specialized radios) (December 2008 - January 2009)

  • Two user test sessions (March - April 2009)

  • Integration in an entrance hall for two days of testing in real environment. (May - June 2009)

This whole process has allowed us to keep a focus throughout the year. The approach from above (the philosophy of the project, our ambition to create an innovative project) and from below (by the inhabitants, the problems of communication and access to information) allowed us to acquire a real feedback and create a tool that incorporates most of the constraints that we were exposed to.
